Achmelvich Beach is a gorgeous area located in the Highlands region of Scotland, the very northern part of the country.The beach is great if you want an unadulterated getaway, as it doesn’t contain any ice cream shops, amusement rides or arcades. The beautiful turquoise sea is safe to swim in and has a calming aura that’s perfect for sightseers or anyone staying in the area who just wants to relax.
There’s a youth hostel nearby, a place where you can rent caravans (though, of course, we recommend that you stay with us), and the nearest restaurant is in the nearby town of Lochinver. Visiting Achmelvich beach allows you to rediscover your relationship with nature, something which is becoming increasingly difficult to do in today’s digital world.
However, that’s not all that it has to offer. For those that are wanting a little more adventure, there’s a ‘secret’ beach to the right of the main beach, and it’s much quieter but just as beautiful.
The Secret Beach
Also known as Vestey’s Beach, it was previously owned by the Vestey family (hence the name). The reason why it’s much quieter is because of how difficult it is to access. Swimming, sailing or kayaking are the recommended ways to get over to Vestey’s Beach. If you’re feeling up to it, the alternative is to cross and climb down about 10 feet of smooth rock, but you’ll need to put a brave face on and your best climbing shoes!
The reason why it’s relatively unknown is because you can’t see it from the main beach. Once you’re at the main beach and you turn to your right, you’re blocked by the rocky cliffs beside it.
It’s only slightly smaller than the main beach but all the more beautiful. If you’re willing to make the trip over, we think you’ll agree. There’s something about being in a secluded area that not many people are aware of that feels so exclusive and exciting!
What Can I Do At The Secret Beach?
There are many things to enjoy while you’re here. If you’re at Vestey’s Beach, you can enjoy all the things you’d get from the main beach. The sand is just as beautiful and the water will make you feel like you’re in the Caribbean!
Apart from the obvious swimming and sunbathing (in summer), we find that water skiing and kayaking are popular activities for guests who are staying in the area.
For fishing enthusiasts, Achmelvich Beach and the Secret Beach are also fishing hotspots. Fishers regularly fish for cod, haddock and mackerel along the coast, so get your fishing rod at the ready if this seems like something for you.
